The Polish airline LOT Polish Airlines has announced that it will convert one of its Embraer E195 jets into a medical aircraft, capable of transporting up to 16 patients on stretchers or six critically ill patients requiring intensive care.

The reconfiguration of the aircraft is part of the European Civil Protection Mechanism (UCPM), integrated into the RescEU program, an initiative of the European Union aimed at strengthening the response to natural disasters and public health emergencies.

In addition to the E195, LOT will provide two more Boeing 737 aircraft for the program, which will be used for transport tasks. All three aircraft will be based in Warsaw, allowing rapid deployment in emergency situations anywhere in Europe.

“LOT is currently developing a detailed cabin layout in close coordination with the other party to the contract. Implementation is expected in the coming months,” the company said in an official statement.

The commitment to RescEU reinforces Poland’s role as an active contributor to EU humanitarian and rescue efforts. LOT also emphasized that if the program’s requirements change in the future, other aircraft may be made available.

Interestingly, the airline had recently announced, during the Paris Air Show, the replacement of its regional fleet. Instead of new Embraer jets, LOT chose to acquire 40 Airbus A220 aircraft, signaling a strategic shift in its commercial operations.
